Here's our content in-brief:
Without further ado, let's get into the piece!
POAP, short for Proof of Attendance Protocol, is an innovative and secure open-source protocol based on blockchain technology, owned and managed by POAP Inc, an American company with headquarters in New York, United States.
The POAP protocol allows users to create digital badges in the form of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) called POAPs, which prove attendance to a particular event and serve as digital memorabilia or commemorative tokens, as well as digital collectibles for the members of the crypto community.
Similar to other NFTs, POAPs are ERC-721 tokens that can be traded on various NFT marketplaces, although they aren't meant to carry high monetary value, as they are usually given for free to participants of an event.
Depending on the event you are attending, POAPs can be claimed by scanning a QR code with your phone and then entering your Ethereum wallet address or email address.
When using an email address to claim your POAP collectible, you will reserve the right to mint the NFT at a further date, whereas if you use an Ethereum address it will be directly minted on the Gnosis chain, from where you can migrate it to Ethereum network by paying a fee of $10-$20, in case a feature of its utility requires it.
At this point, it seems like POAPs are just another NFT. Or worse, more akin to digital badges. What's so great about them?
The first POAP NFTs or POAPs were initially minted on the Ethereum blockchain back in 2019, at a Web3 hackathon called the ETHDenver Convention, as a way to reward participants in the event. POAP migrated to the Gnosis chain, formerly known as the xDai network in October 2020, an Ethereum sidechain with high-speed transactions and low fees, which has drastically reduced the cost of minting POAPs collectibles.
Hence, POAPs became the web3 industry standard for verifying people who went to an event, or what we call, proof of attendance.
Aside from serving as digital collectibles that remind you of an event, Proof Of Attendance Protocol NFTs can be used by event organizers as invitations or tickets to future private events. Event attendees can use POAPs to confirm attendance or to share the event with their friends or contacts.
Other useful features of the protocol include:
The Warner Music Group started a partnership with POAP back in April 2022, when they announced they will use POAPs at concerts of musicians in their label's portfolio, a decision backed by a $10M funding round. Other notable brands that have partnered up with POAP Studios are Budweiser, Adidas, US Open, and Lollapalooza, with over half of a million total POAPs issued so far.
The idea for the POAP app and project belongs to its founder Patricio Worthalter, who initially thought of it in 2018. His vision describes an ecosystem that facilitates the preservation of memories using NFT technology. With the launch of the Proof of Attendance Protocol, a new real-life side of web3 was invented, as well as a fun way for fans and crypto community members to connect in real life.
POAP will be having a booth live at NFT Paris.
We're excited to see what the web3 brand has in store for us - any new and innovative ideas to take proof-of-attendance one step further?
Come over to find out for yourself!
In a nutshell, POAP is a trailblazer bringing new solutions connecting the decentralized web3 universe to the physical world. POAPs are a fun way to encourage more people to attend web3 social events, and certainly a flex online!
